The First 5 Service Corps is a statewide AmeriCorps*VISTA program started in 2001 that engages community members in service projects to help children between the ages of 0 and 5 years old reach Kindergarten healthy, developmentally ready to learn and better prepared to succeed in life. VISTA stands for “Volunteers In Service To America”. They are similar to the Peace Corps except that they serve within the boundaries of the United States. AmeriCorps* VISTA members are “people power” to help organizations address a new or existing program area related to their mission. The mission of AmeriCorps*VISTA is to eliminate poverty through the development of resources and outreaching these resources to the low-income, at-risk communities. Through activities such as fundraising, strategic planning, evaluation, volunteer management, outreach, and collaborative development, VISTA members mobilize community resources and increase the capacity of organizations to better address the needs of the communities in which they serve. The First 5 works to fight poverty through early education, health, and parent support.



What is the Commitment?

VISTA members serve full-time for a minimum of one year. All positions begin on November 17, 2007 and end November 17, 2008. Individuals who successfully complete their first term of service have the option to return for up to two additional years.



What do VISTA Members do?

Members are placed within partnering nonprofits agencies focused on providing early education, health services, and serving the homeless. Projects include working with First 5 Association, School Districts, United Way, Boys and Girls Clubs, Family Resource Centers, Children Health Initiative, American Academy of Pediatrics, Orangewood Children’s Foundation, Hospital Association of Southern California, 2-1-1 Orange County, and many more. Projects are located in Different Counties in California such as Del Norte, Mendocino, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Orange County, Every project has a different scope of work ranging from providing parents with knowledge of community resources to fund development for program sustainability.



VISTA members will be responsible for one or more of the following: community outreach and marketing, event coordination, grant research and writing, implementing project service evaluation and needs assessments, service coordination, development of systems and procedures, volunteer recruitment and training, data management, and project planning.



What are the Minimum Qualifications?

Bachelor’s degree is preferred. People with experience for example, career changers or retired community are welcome, but those with the drive and desire to make a difference are essential. All positions require a one year commitment with no outside commitments such as school or employment. In addition, must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident, and must have reliable transportation. Bilingual skills in Spanish are helpful, but not mandatory.



What are the benefits?

Every VISTA will receive the following;

A choice of $4,725 Ed Award or $1,200 cash stipend upon successful completion of service.

Living allowance from $800 to $949 gross per month (Depending on County Program)

Individual Health Insurance

Childcare of up to $300, if eligible

Monthly Housing Stipend $100-$850 (depending on County Program)

Current Educational Loan Forbearance or Deferment

Professional Growth and Training Opportunities

Relocation assistance of $550, if moving over 50 miles
